Notes: Personnel: Madala Kunene (guitar). Often heralded as "the king of Zulu guitar," Madala Kunene is one of South Africa's many superb musical treasures. Hailing from the Kwazulu-Natal region, home of the Zulus, Kunene incorporates elements of Zulu culture into his music, including call-and-response passages, and vocal-guitar interplay meant to aid trances and divination. Sometimes solo, and sometimes framed by percussion and additional voices, Kunene's evocative singing rises from his spiraling acoustic lines, running a through line straight from African history to the center of the listener's consciousness. His tastefully selected and compiled AFRICAN CLASSICS installment does not disappoint.
