Notes: This 2008 G. Love outing finds the ever-laidback Philadelphia-bred singer/guitarist (born Garrett Dutton) once again officially sharing the bill with Special Sauce, even though the backing ensemble was present on much of his solo work. While Love takes the kid-friendly route (a la frequent tourmate Jack Johnson) on the gentle ode to fatherhood, "Soft and Sweet," he gets political on the soulful "Peace, Love and Happiness" and sophomoric on the funky "Who's Got the Weed," proving that he's far from predictable within the confines of his folk/blues-informed acoustic-leaning style.
The Philadelphia-based singer and guitarist has been standing at the intersection of hip-hop, the blues, and white-boy frat-house grooves since the release of his 1994 debut, G. LOVE AND SPECIAL SAUCE. While Love is not above being a bit corny at times ("Cold Beverages," anyone?), he's a true student of the music he uses to create his funky sonic bouillabaisse. And with a backing band (the Special Sauce) as enthusiastic about getting down as himself, Love has been able to sustain a surprisingly long and varied career while maintaining a vision uniquely his own.
