Musical pioneer and former Brazilian government minister, Gilberto Gil traverses genres on his 2008 Grammy-nominated release, BANDA LARGA CORDEL. Contemporary pop, rock, and acoustic sounds permeate the album, reflecting just some of the varied styles he has been influenced by in the past. However, it is still on the simpler samba and bossa nova tracks that he truly shines. Songs like "Samba de los Angeles," "Amor de Carnaval," and "Cano" highlight the softer qualities of Gil's voice and the beauty of the contemporary Brazilian sound.
Dirty Linen (p.67) - "With his cool, easygoing vocals set to a variety of texturally diverse arrangements....Gil obscures language barriers and delivers his message."
Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.45) - "With his voice intact after more than 40 years in the business, Gil demonstrates that not only is the muse still with him, but he's still eager to try new directions -- a trait he has proudly carried since his Tropicalia years."
With a career that dates back to the early 1960s, Gilberto Gil is one of the major innovators of Brazilian pop. A founder of the Tropicalia movement, he has embraced a huge variety of influences, from traditional regional styles of the Brazilian Northeast to jazz, reggae, disco, rock, and African music. Romantic, political, and downright funky, Gil always has an eye on both the past and the future.
