Recording information: Diamond Needle Recording Studios. Arranger: Mike Rogers. His "Twist," "Limbo," and "Hucklebuck" songs ignited dance-dance-revolutions back in the day and are still a kick to listen to, but the big news on this 2008 release is the bonus single (and several remixes thereof), "Knock Down the Walls." The jangly, mid-tempo rocker with a decidedly guitar-heavy sound is light-years away from the early-rock insouciance that made Chubby Checker a household name. The remixes offer discofied versions of the track, but the meat of the songs is, at turns, tough, straight-talking, and wistful power pop, demonstrating that even old legends can stay current and relevant if they choose to.
There is no other artist whose place in pop music is as inextricably linked to a dance as Chubby Checker's is to "The Twist." Although the singer also taught millions of teenagers to do "The Fly," "The Pony," "The Hucklebuck," and "The Limbo Rock," Checker is forever connected with twisting and the 1960 version (originally recorded by Hank Ballard) that started the whole craze. Checker would rework the song numerous times during his career, perhaps most humorously on his 1986 collaboration with the Fat Boys entitled "The Twist (Yo', Twist!)."
