Performer: Bobby Darin
Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Released in the early '60s, here's the first part of Darin's career told by the vocalist himself in a 12-song greatest-hits collection that really works. The narration inserts still function well after all these years, making you realize that this was originally a vinyl album, as Darin negotiates from rock & roller to finger-snapping lounge lizard. Oddly enough, there's a production error at the end that snips off the last tune, "Lazy River," marring an otherwise interesting reissue. ~ Cub Koda
Bronx-born singer and songwriter Bobby Darin was always a man who bucked convention. Though he started out writing and singing rock & roll hits such as "Splish Splash" in the 1950s, he stood out from the crowd in the '60s as a post-Sinatra crooner. By the end of the decade, he had reinvented himself yet again, as a credible writer and interpreter of folk-rock material, often of a social-protest nature. The multi-talented Darin also had numerous successful film roles in the '60s, and continued performing until his 1973 death from a heart condition.
