Notes: Before industrial, before electroclash, before synth-pop and techno, before No Wave and post-punk, before almost everything there was Suicide. Forming in the early 1970s, the New York City duo mixed Elvis Presley-on-amphetamines vocals and Philip Glass-gone-punk keyboards to create an unprecedented sound as influential as it was arresting. This limited-edition six-disc box set contains previously unreleased live performances from '77 and '78, around the time the band released their landmark debut album. LIVE 1977-1978 captures singer Alan Vega and keyboard man Martin Rev performing everywhere from their CBGB home turf to Hamburg, Germany, bringing their provocative, uncompromising, but strangely hypnotic and otherworldly sound to audiences that ranged from receptive to outright hostile. Everything from psychedelia and garage rock to punk and avant-garde minimalism winds through the bold, bracing sound of Suicide.
The Wire (p.55) - "Vega and Rev rip through raw and vital variations of their early songs -- with each brutal performance making them stronger, more confident and aware of their power to influence those who were listening." Record Collector (magazine) (p.97) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he confrontational nature of Suicide's hyper-electronic situationism is brought to life as never before."
As Suicide, New York City's Alan Vega and Martin Rev created a type of music unlike anything else going on around them in the punk era. Combining Vega's punk/futurist Presleyisms with the electronic squeaks and squawks of Rev's keyboards and rhythm machines, Suicide created a sinister yet strangely joyous noise that inspired everyone from the Cars to the 21st century Electroclash movement. Though they'll forever be identified as part of the downtown NY no wave scene of the 1970s and early 1980s, they've periodically reunited in the decades since.
