VIC LATINO PRESENTS ULTRA MIX collects some of the hottest charting hits of 2008 as remixed for the clubs by some of the industry's hottest remixers. Danity Kane's "Damaged," for example, is tricked out by Friscia & Lamboy, Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" is reworked by Jody Den Broeder, and Kat DeLuna's "Run the Show" is given a makeover by Johnny Vicious. If you're looking for your favorite familiar tunes in versions tailor-made for the dance floor, look no further than ULTRA MIX. It seems as if every month, American dance label Ultra churns out another beat-mixed compilation -- and while that's not exactly true, it's closer to the truth than you might think. This one is, oddly, not in the usual Ultra numbered series, but is titled Ultra Mix: Vic Latino, as if it's an audio file on a PC. The bridge-and-tunnel crowd's favorite DJ, Vic Latino, is the man behind the selections here (the mixing is minimal), and to be fair, this one is slightly better than the usual dance mix with a bikini-clad girl on its cover. That's due to no effort of Latino's, though, and is just attributable to the fact that some of these songs are actually good. Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music," with its mighty Michael Jackson sample, for example, is great no matter the context or remix, though Jody Den Broeder's "Big Room Mix" certainly helps matters. And Bob Sinclair's "Space Funk Mix" of Madonna's "4 Minutes" turns Timbaland's chop-shop production into slinky French disco-funk; this remix was one of 2008's best to begin with, and coming after Enur's vile "Calabria 2008" in this mix, it sounds even better. The rest of Ultra Mix is a mishmash of the good (Eric Prydz's world-conquering anthem "Pjanoo," Tiesto's refreshingly sassy take on Britney Spears' "Piece of Me"), the bad (any remix by Johnny Vicious, of which there are two here), and the very ugly (one word: Basshunter, bad enough to make one long for the artistic integrity of, oh, Scooter -- at least Eurocheese knows it's Eurocheese). ~ Thomas Inskeep
