Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: Gotham Distributing Corp. Notes: Disc one of the Collectables label's Top Hits of the 50s collection features 20 "Fabulous Hits" from the era, with an emphasis on crooners like Perry Como ("Hot Diggity"), Pat Boone ("I Almost Lost My Mind"), and Kay Starr ("Rock and Roll Waltz"). There are a few moments of genuine electricity -- Carl Perkins' singing about his "Blue Suede Shoes" sounds positively demonic when surrounded by the likes of Hugo Winterhalter and Doris Day, and Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" is darkness unleashed amidst the Chordettes' "Born to Be with You" and Patti Page's "Allegheny Moon" -- but for the most part, these Fabulous Hits aren't too far from the musical numbers in an Abbott & Costello film. ~ James Christopher Monger
