Performer: Various Artists/DJ Format
Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: DJ Format admits the nearly unthinkable in the liner notes of Fania DJ Series: "I have to be honest and say that before I got asked to do this mix, the 'Latin section' in my record collection was fairly small." He comes across as a fanatic on this set, however, including precious few of the acknowledged classic Fania artists and ranging through the combined Fania catalog -- Fania, Tico, Alegre, Cotique -- as though he'd owned Cosa Nuestra on vinyl since he was a teenager. His quick immersion into the world of Fania seems to have focused mostly on Latin soul and boogaloo from the late '60s (the expected tack for a rare-groove or turntablist DJ to take) with tracks from the Latinaires, the Lebrn Brothers, Jimmy Sabater, and Dave "Baby" Cortez taking as much room as big-name artists like Eddie Palmieri or Ray Barretto. And despite Format's dazzling turntable skills, he doesn't get too flashy with this mix, impressing rather with his pacing and selection than with jump cuts and spinbacks. Hard to believe he could become Gilles Peterson in a heartbeat, but this volume in the Fania DJ Series is a treasure. ~ John Bush
