UFO: Phil Mogg (vocals); Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards); Michael Schenker (guitar); Pete Way (bass instrument); Andy Parker (drums). Although Euro-rockers UFO had built a solid fan base worldwide amongst metal heads with such releases as PHENOMENON, FORCE IT, and NO HEAVY PETTING, the band had yet to issue a solid album from beginning to end. This changed with their 1977 release, LIGHTS OUT. As with the aforementioned titles, guitarist Michael Schenker's six-string heroics are the real determining factor to UFO's sound--look no further than his fluid soloing skills on the barnstorming title track. But you'll find other metallic standouts throughout LIGHTS OUT, such as the album-opening good times anthem "Too Hot to Handle," and the Zeppelin-esque "Electric Phase," as well as more subdued fare such as "Try Me." LIGHTS OUT remains one of UFO's finest recordings.
UFO were a British hard rock band who, during the course of their long career, dabbled in blues rock, space rock, metal, and AOR. The band is often cited as a key influence on the NWOBHM. Formed in 1969, UFO pirated away a young Michael Schenker from the Scorpions. The then-fledgling guitar hero graced some of the band's most well-regarded albums, and is credited with helping UFO define their signature sound, before rejoining the Scorpions in the late '70s. The '80s were not kind to UFO, though the band's classic line-up (including Schenker) did re-form for an album and shows in the mid '90s.
