Performer: Lefty Frizzell
Distributor: Infinity Entertainment Gr Notes: If you're looking for poignant Lefty Frizzell ballads like "Mom and Dad's Waltz," look elsewhere, because STEPPIN' OUT is a collection of the honky-tonk pioneer's most energetic, up-tempo tunes. Not only did Frizzell set down a hard-country sound that everyone from George Jones to Merle Haggard would follow, but his early-1950s recordings like "Shine, Shave and Shower" and "If You've Got the Money (I've Got the Time)" also laid the groundwork for the rockabilly rebels who would come along a few years later. As part of the Bear Family label's GONNA SHAKE THIS SHACK TONIGHT series of rockin' country gems, STEPPIN' OUT offers an exciting look at the the revved-up roadhouse side of this country giant's towering catalog of classics.
Influenced equally by Jimmie Rodgers and by the cowboy jazz of Texas-based western swing, Texan country legend Lefty Frizzell was among the first to apply jazzy vocal phrasing to the honky-tonk country template. Equally seminal as a songwriter, he turned out gems like "If You've Got the Money (I've Got the Time)" and "Look What Thoughts Will Do," which would become staples of the standard country repertoire. In the first half of the 1950s, he was a virtual hit machine. Though his star faded slightly in the subsequent decades, he continued performing and recording (often still hitting the charts) into the '70s. He passed away in 1975, but his enormous influence can be felt in everyone from Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard to Dwight Yoakam.
