Notes: Five years after the release of SINGLES '93-'03, the Chemical Brothers decided to issue another catalogue overview, this time incorporating selections from the U.K. electronica act's '05 outing, PUSH THE BUTTON, and the subsequent WE ARE THE NIGHT ('07). While diehard fans of the duo's groundbreaking 1990s material may feel a bit shortchanged (particularly in the absence of 1996's pounding EP number, "Loops of Fury"), Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons's latter-day audience will applaud the inclusion of songs like the searing "Believe" (featuring Bloc Party's Kele Okereke on vocals) and the slinky "Do It Again" (with Ali Love). Naturally, many of the pair's club classics are present and accounted for, most notably the surging "Leave Home" and the Beatles-gone-techno opus "Setting Sun" (with Oasis's Noel Gallagher). The collection also includes the previously unreleased Spank Rock collaboration, "Keep My Composure," and a limited-edition version of BROTHERHOOD features the act's rare "Electronic Battle Weapon" tracks.
Billboard (p.42) - "[A] snapshot of the duo at work. Now, fans can track how 'Weapon 3' became the tauter, more relentless 'Under the Influence'..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "15 out-and-out floor-fillers. Included are 'Galvanize', 'Block Rockin' Beats' and 'Out Of Control'..." Blender (Magazine) (p.85) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands sold themselves as fun-loving weird scientists, concocting a bright, booming mix of hip-hop break beats, trance whoosh and psychedelic-Beatles whimsy..." Paste (magazine) (p.67) - "This high-impact compilation, brimming with sirens, hortatory drum rolls and spine-tingling stereo pans, helps us imagine what it might feel like to be a pinball....The quality is indisputable..." Clash (magazine) (p.112) - "[T]his BROTHERHOOD compilation should introduce younger listeners to their near stadium dance sounds whilst rose tint their elders through near two decades of inescapable raving. An essential compendium of new millennium musical milestones." URB (Magazine) (p.86) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Geared for DJ play in the clubs, these beats, breaks, minimal loops and experimental arrangements prove the duo's ability to continually top themselves." Record Collector (magazine) (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Here the Brothers run free with unbridled dancefloor destruction rather than charts in mind, while trying out prototypes which were then developed into full-scale releases..."
The music of the Chemical Brothers, a pair of DJs who helped popularize the "Big Beat" electronic subgenre in the '90s, has the heft of rock, the groove of club music, and the spirit of experimentation that lifts all boats. Through their collaborations with rockers both massive (the Gallagher brothers of Oasis) and vaguely avant-garde (Mercury Rev), Tom Rowland and Ed Simons have helped break down the walls between rock and dance music. On "Setting Sun," one of their biggest hits, the Chemical Brothers fused elements straight out of the Beatles with electronic dance music's sonic dimensions to create something powerful and timeless, groundbreaking yet accessible.
