Years after he was supposed to have his breakthrough as a solo artist, R&B singer/songwriter/producer Ryan Leslie finally unveiled his self-titled debut album in early 2009. Like John Legend and Kanye West before him, Leslie built his reputation on behind-the-scenes studio work (including sessions with Beyonce, Britney Spears, Danity Kane, and LL Cool J), and his slightly eccentric aesthetic shines through on this record, particularly on singles such as the funky, sample-tinged "Diamond Girl" and the keyboard-heavy "How It Was Supposed to Be." The album also includes the electro-lined "Addiction," which features rapper Fabolous and Leslie's protg, renowned R&B/pop vocalist Cassie.
Entertainment Weekly (p.68) - "It's a testament to Leslie's extraordinary melodic instincts that the disc has as much replay value as it does." -- Grade: B
Billboard (p.37) - "With its smooth melodies, fresh beats and effortlessly suave lyrics, the album satisfies from beginning to end."
Harlem-raised and Harvard-educated, Ryan Leslie has been an equal threat as a producer, musician, and savvy self-marketer. He's contributed tracks behind the scenes for artists across the R&B and hip-hop section, from legends like LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg to contemporary superstars such as Beyonce. He also discovered successful R&B vocalist Cassie, signing her to his Next Selection label, a subsidiary of Puff Daddy's Bad Boy empire. In 2005, Leslie released his solo debut, JUST RIGHT, and found great success overseas. But he came to visible celebrity in the U.S. upon launching his RyanLeslieTV YouTube channel, which seized on the viral-marketing trend and drew widespread attention to his 2009 self-titled effort.
