Groups like the Killers have recalled how potent a weapon a big, sparkly 1980s-style chorus can be, and this lesson has not been lost on Jackson, Mississippi's Jonezetta. CRUEL TO BE YOUNG is as bright and clear as morning sunlight on an ocean wave, with radio-ready hooks glimmering in every song. Songs like "Busy Body" and "Valentine" gradually build to an orgiastic release of pounding drums, soaring guitars, and vocals while somehow avoiding sounding corny. By contrast, both "Fur Coat" and "I Watched You, Out From Your Window" are quieter and more melancholic as well.
Alternative Press (p.162) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hat's most impressive is the increased sophistication: From the fanciful, piano-driven 'Paint & Picture' to the gently lilting psych-pop of 'Fur Coat (Roaming Like Animals),' it's a surprisingly adventurous, charismatic effort."
