Alliance Notes: Personnel: Jackson Browne (vocals, guitar, piano); Jeff Young, Alethea Mills, Chavonne Morris (vocals); Mark Goldenberg (electric guitar); Kevin McCormick (bass guitar); Mauricio Lewak (drums). Recording information: Groove Masters, Santa Monica, CA. The front cover of Jackson Browne's TIME THE CONQUEROR features the eternally boyish-looking singer-songwriter sporting a grizzled, graying beard that puts the album title into its personal context. But musically speaking, TIME THE CONQUEROR finds Browne back in his musical comfort zone, delivering exactly the sort of Southern California singer-songwriter pop that made his name back in the 1970s. Recorded with his longtime touring band, the 10 songs have the unfussy, laid-back sound of vintage Browne albums like HOLD OUT and THE PRETENDER, while the lyrics mix political commentary and personal ruminations in Browne's trademark style. This is almost certainly his best album since at least 1983's LAWYERS IN LOVE.
Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "TIME THE CONQUEROR finds him protesting with typical directness....As he contemplates issues of love and travel, he's always assessing the ways the world has changed since the Sixties..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Throughout, his band plays with subdued beauty and Browne sings with resonant grace - abetted by two strikingly sensitive new backing vocalists, Chavonne Morris and Alethea Mills."
Jackson Browne was part of the mid-'60s Orange County, CA folk scene that also included Tim Buckley, Steve Noonan (one of the first to record Browne's compositions), and Greg Copeland (for whom Browne later produced an album). After having songs cut by everyone from Nico to the Byrds, Browne embarked upon a highly successful solo career, becoming the premier sensitive singer-songwriter of the '70s Los Angeles studio-rock scene that included Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. Browne's commercial fortunes waned a bit when his writing veered from the personal to the political, but the quality of his work has never waned.
