Notes: With his gentle, melodic, mellifluous sax tones, Kenny G became an icon of sorts after scoring an unlikely instrumental top five hit with the melancholy "Songbird." Over the years, he would roam from new age to quiet storm and notch a couple of other crossover hits with "Don't Make Me Wait For Love" (featuring the soulful vocals of Lenny Williams) and "Silhouette." This mp3 player-ready compilation plumbs the depths of the mellow musician's vast body of work. Part of Legacy's Playlist series that boasts "the life-changing songs, the out of print tracks, the hits, the fan favorites everyone loves, and the songs that make the artists who they are", The Very Best of Kenny G leads off appropriately enough with the smooth jazz giant's biggest hit, "Songbird." From there it's a familiar set that includes most of the obvious career highlights like "Moment" and "Havana," while finding a nice balance between tunes with guest vocalists and those that rely only on Mr. G's impossibly slick saxophone. [Legacy's Playlist series functions both as a conventional CD and as a CD-ROM, featuring a large .pdf file with complete liner and track info, CD-quality plus mp3-ready files, photos, wallpaper, and other extras.] ~ James Christopher Monger
Saxophonist Kenny G first gained attention as Kenny Gorelick, a member of second-tier jazz-fusion group the Jeff Lorber Fusion. After going solo, he developed a hyper-slick, instrumental pop sound that featured simple melodies played over gentle beds of jazzy mood music. With the help of clever promotion and marketing from Clive Davis's Arista Records, Kenny G's albums sold millions, and the saxophonist became one of the world's most famous modern instrumentalists. His success caused a great deal of debate in the jazz community, as his sound owed as much to Muzak and easy listening as it did to "serious" jazz.
