Jobriath was supposed to be America's answer to British glam rock, a Stateside David Bowie, with all the glittery, androgynous trappings (in fact, he's said to have been the first openly gay rocker). The bid failed, and Jobriath released only two albums. He died of AIDS in 1983, but his work gained posthumous appreciation, and Morrissey himself initially spearheaded the reissue of Jobriath's first, self-titled album, an ambitious, endearingly over-the-top, eclectic glam artifact that could only have happened in the the mid-'70s. |
