Performer: Ice Cube
Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Ice Cube's ESSENTIALS package (a complement of sorts to his GREATEST HITS CD from 2001) skews toward the expectations of commercial audiences, and in that respect, displays his uncanny ability to deliver several monster hits over 20 years, even when the West Coast brand of gangsta bravado had fallen out of favor among record buyers. Any compilation that contains a slew of solid classics like "Rollin' With The Lench Mob," "It Was A Good Day," and "Check Yo Self" is worth investigating. And what's more remarkable is how latter-day cuts like "Go To Church" and "Ghetto Vet" integrate themselves seamlessly without unfavorably calling attention to the high energy of his earlier albums.
A founding member of seminal West Coast gangsta rap group NWA, Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson) has managed to achieve longevity in the notoriously short-lived world of rap stardom. His earlier solo albums (LETHAL INJECTION, DEATH CERTIFICATE) are among the most uncompromising rap records ever made. Despite accusations of rampant homophobia and misogyny in his work, Ice Cube sold millions of records in the '90s, and his G-funk style proved enormously influential to subsequent rappers. Along the way, he even managed a successful career in films (FRIDAY, BARBERSHOP, BOYZ N' THE HOOD).
