Three Flights Up
Performer: Pat Metheny
Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar, Synclavier); Dave Holland (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded at Power Station Studios, New York, New York on December 21, 1989. Originally issued in 1990, QUESTION & ANSWER gets the superior remastering treatment it deserves from the Nonesuch label. Acknowledged by many critics and fans as one of his very best-ever sessions, QUESTION finds Metheny matched with two fellow masters, acoustic bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes. (Haynes has played with virtually every major figure in jazz, including Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.) This trio's level of interaction approaches that of telepathy, achieving a rare balance between freewheeling improvisation and group cohesion. Less ethereal than some of Metheny's other efforts, QUESTION & ANSWER is classic, hard-swinging jazz in the vein of Jim Hall (a major Metheny influence) and Wes Montgomery.
Q - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...(Metheny) at his most creative..."
Down Beat (9/90) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "...Using a warm, muted tone throughout...Metheny burns on a low flame, spurred on by the high degree of interplay and sense of adventure he achieves with Haynes and Holland... whose broken patterns imply rather than state the underlying tempo...a must for drummers. And guitarists..."
Jazz guitar innovator Pat Metheny first appeared in the mid-'70s as a prodigy in Gary Burton's band, and soon thereafter he was leading his own group. He is among the few jazz artists who've become household names--his music has appeal well beyond the typical jazz audience, yet his artistic integrity is unquestionable, and he has used his success to pursue many less-commercial side projects. Ever the explorer, Metheny has been a pioneer of the guitar synthesizer, a champion of the avant garde, and a unifier of musical styles, incorporating rock, folk, world music, and even country influences into his unique musical paradigm.
