Notes: From a latter-day vantage point, Clannad's first album is probably too pop-oriented for traditionalists, but too traditional in feel for those who were attracted to the group's later pop-oriented recordings. For those listeners without any particular preconceptions, it's an invigorating blend of Irish traditional folk with modern influences. More than any of Clannad's subsequent albums, this debut bears the influence of the eclectic, jazzy edge of Pentangle, particularly in the fat double basslines; Maire Brennan's high, pristine vocals show an affinity with Pentangle's Jacqui McShee as well. Maire's harp and Paul Brennan's flute, however, give the music a strong Irish stamp. Sung mostly in Gaelic and occasionally in English, the material is quite varied in scope, and the arrangements and vocals are vastly pretty and melodic. The cover of Tim Rose's "Morning Dew" that concludes the album is one of the best versions ever of this oft-covered folk-rock tune. ~ Richie Unterberger
Clannad began in 1970 as a traditional Irish folk group in the vein of Planxty or the Chieftans. The band eventually began incorporating a slicker, more atmospheric production aesthetic, evolving into creators of new age pop/Celtic soundscapes. They're as well known for their television and movie soundtracks as they are for their own albums. Both vocalist Maire Brennan and her sister Enya were able to use Clannad as a springboard for successful solo work.
