Recording information: Mike Dean's House Of Hits, Cypress, TX; The Coughee Pot, Houston, TX. On the eve of Devin's release from longtime label Rap-A-Lot, J-Prince and company packaged a 12-track compilation of some of the Dude's hottest rare and unheard recordings. Devin's devilish, smoke-filled verses, skirt-chasing routines, and tales of everyman haplessness never fail to entertain, and HI LIFE is no exception. The quality production work predictably hovers between molasses-thick funk samples and the Dude's trademark brand of smoothed-out southern G-Funk. Bushwick Bill, Mo Lew, 14K, KB, Gar, and the Coughee Brothaz are featured.
While his true genius may ever be obscured in a haze of smoke, Devin the Dude is the highwayman of hip-hop blissfully living outside of the bling universe; he's a rap rebel and outlaw by being neither rebel nor outlaw. Like another famous dude, Devin merely abides. A storytelling rapper in the vein of Slick Rick, the witty, self-deprecating Houston MC emerged in the early-1990s, delighting in his own mellow rhymes about faithful cars and faithless women. While he swiftly built a reputation among his peers, and guested on hits by Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, and others, his releases were few and far between; however, he hit a groove in the late-`00s as a wider swath of hip-hop fans began to whiff of his talent.
