Before her debut IN A PERFECT WORLD. appeared in 2009, Keri Hilson had already established an impressive track record in the industry, writing high-charting hits for Mary J. Blige, Timbaland, and Britney Spears, among others, and contributing her unique, elastic voice on various high-profile cameos. IN A PERFECT WORLD. lives up to its promise by giving her singing and writing plenty of room to stretch out. Club bangers like "Turnin' Me On" and "Get Your Money Up" are Hilson's specialty, but she's no slouch on slow-burn ballads and seductive urban contemporary numbers either. Top-flight production from Timbaland, Danja, and Polow da Don provides the lush sonic backdrop against which Hilson's talents unfurl.
Rolling Stone (p.72) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he albums' 14 songs -- from the Polow Da Don-produced bumper 'Get Your Money Up' to the simmering slow-jam 'Make Love' -- are uniformly excellent."
Entertainment Weekly (p.63) - "[A] seductive debut CD full of slick, radio-friendly cuts." -- Grade: B+
Q (Magazine) (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[S]he merges her songwriting craft and mellifluous vocals with Timbaland and Polow Da Don's backdrops, most mightily on 'Return The Favor' and 'Knock You Down'..."
Blender (Magazine) (p.60) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[S]he really shines on the goopily romantic 'Slow Dance,' where a very 1985-sounding drum machine is all Hilson needs to turn herself into the ultimate prom princess."
Singer-songwriter Keri Hilson established a reputation as a behind-the-scenes force in urban contemporary in the 2000s, with work as an arranger and back-up vocalist on a number of projects. Cameo spots on Xzibit's single, "Hey Now (Mean Muggin)," and in Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" video brought her to public attention, and an association with Timbaland led to several spots on the famous producer's 2007 album SHOCK VALUE; Timbaland in turn signed Hilson to his Mosley Music label, where she became his most prolific hitmaker.
