Dance-pop artist Lady Gaga received plenty of hype for her 2008 summer dance hit, "Just Dance," and her cheeky take on pulsing, electronic dance music. THE FAME, the artist's full-length debut, appeared later in 2008, fulfilling her promise with its sleekly crafted radio and club-ready tunes and glittering, top-shelf production. Like the Scissor Sisters, or mid-2000s efforts by Madonna, THE FAME traffics in retro dancefloor glamour, but Lady Gaga pulls it off with the requisite amount of cheek and attitude. Fun, stylish, and, yes, danceable, THE FAME is a solid opening salvo from an up-and-coming artist.
Entertainment Weekly (p.61) - "THE FAME is remarkably pure in its vision of a world in which nothing trumps being 'beautiful, dirty, and rich.'"
Lady GaGa is a dance-pop singer from New York City. Born Stefani Germanotta in Yonkers in 1986, she attended the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU while performing at open-mic nights around the city. An early collaboration with rapper/producer Akon led to her signing with Interscope Records, which released her debut album THE FAME in October 2008. She scored a number one hit and a Grammy nomination with her ode to lost, drunken nights, "Just Dance." The song went on to top the charts in several other countries, helping GaGa to develop an international following. The vocalist made headlines at the 2009 Brit Awards when she, along with Brandon Flowers of the Killers, performed with the Pet Shop Boys on a medley of the synth-pop duo's hits, including the classic "West End Girls."
