The lavishly packaged three-disc box set 50 GREATEST HITS is a solid overview of Reba McEntire's tenure at MCA Records, from 1984 to 2007. Opening with 1984's "How Blue," McEntire's first hit single for the label, the set continues in roughly chronological order all the way to 2007's "Because of You," a duet with Kelly Clarkson co-written by Ben Moody and David Hodges of Evanescence. As a result, 50 GREATEST HITS is a history not only of McEntire's career, but of Nashville tastes as a whole during this time period. Winding from the mid-1980s new traditionalist scene through the sparkly glamour of the post-Garth Brooks 1990s to the twangy pop songs of modern country radio, this box set neatly encapsulates the high points of Reba McEntire's output.
As one of the best-selling female country artists of the 20th century, Reba McEntire purveyed a pop-flavored brand of country music that--by the mid '90s--propelled the singer out of the world of country and into the mainstream. McEntire has been featured on Broadway, appeared in numerous films, and written two books, and beginning in 2001 she became the star of her own successful sitcom, REBA. As a musical artist, however, it is her unmistakable voice and her talent for choosing just the right material that will always be her greatest assets.
