Performer: Twisted Sister
Producer: Pete Way; Mark Mendoza Distributor: (Independently by Label) Notes: Twisted Sister: Dee Snider (vocals); Eddie Ojeda (guitar, background vocals); Jay Jay French (guitar); Mark "The Animal" Mendoza (bass, background vocals); A.J. Pero (drums, background vocals). Principally recorded at The Barn, Kitchenham Farm, Ashburnham, England; I.C.C. Studios, Eastbourne, England; Maison Rouge, London, England. This is the album that started it all for Twisted Sister. With the group's classic lineup complete and producer Pete Way (of UFO and Waysted fame) at the helm, TS put to wax its early club material and in the process came up with one of the greatest hard-rock debuts ever. "What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)," with its hypercharged metal riff, has been the band's concert-opener for years. "Bad Boys (Of Rock 'n' Roll)" is a testosterone-fueled singalong with a great hook and lead guitar lick. "Shoot 'Em Down," which received some airplay upon release, features the furious riffs and anthemic qualities that would characterize much of the band's material through the years. "Destroyer" is as heavy as heavy gets, while the title track was singled out by Tipper Gore's P.M.R.C. for being about sado-masochism and bondage (in reality, it's about guitarist Eddie Ojeda's throat operation). "I'll Never Grow Up Now!" is a rebellious teen anthem of independence. UNDER THE BLADE is for all die-hard metal aficionados and for those fans only familiar with "We're Not Gonna Take It."
Twisted Sister, fronted by charismatic Long Islander Dee Snider, occupied a unique place in rock-&-roll history. A band of populists with a regular-guy attitude toward fun, the band also set out to shock with blatantly sexual lyrics and outrageous gender-bending costumes. They formed in 1976--partly in response to the disco phenomenon--and opted for more straightforward hard-rock riffs rather than the new punk sounds being created by their local peers. After relentless gigging and recording, they finally hit the charts in 1984 with the all-purpose us-against-the-world anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It." After a few more albums with no further hits, the band disassembled and Snider went on to a varied solo career.
