Performer: The Boxmasters
Producer: W.R. Bud Thornton; J.D. Andrew Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Personnel: J.D. Andrew (recorder). Audio Mixer: J.D. Andrew. The Boxmasters, the British Invasion-inspired trio led by actor and screenwriter Billy Bob Thornton, follow their debut album with a disc of twangy Christmas tunes. As one would expect from a holiday album by the star of BAD SANTA, the title CHRISTMAS CHEER is more than a little ironic: the three band originals are scabrously anti-festive, and the covers include John Prine's "Christmas In Prison" and Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas." Somewhat more upbeat takes on standards like "Silver Bells" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" lighten the mood a bit.
Actor Billy Bob Thornton had already made his mark in music with four dark, moody albums as a singer/songwriter before he started The Boxmasters. With the band, Thornton's sound took on a honky-tonk/Bakersfield country direction, while his lyrics retained their bite but added some black humor. The Boxmasters' self-titled debut album appeared in 2008--the double-disc was made up of one-half original tunes and one-half smartly chosen covers of songs by everyone from Michael Nesmith to Lee Clayton. After a brief detour for a country Christmas record, the band released MODBILLY in 2009, which featured a similar half-originals/half-covers format.
