Charlie Haden is a key figure in modern jazz, a bassist and composer whose work as both sideman and leader is universally respected. His son, Josh Haden, leads the indie pop band Spain, and daughters Petra, Tanya, and Rachel have performed together as the Haden Triplets, maintain individual solo careers, and have been in bands ranging from That Dog and the Rentals to Silversun Pickups and the Decemberists. But Charlie Haden got his start in country music: his parents and older siblings were the Haden Family, a popular country group of the 1930s and '40s, and he made his public debut at the age of two, singing "Oh Shenandoah" on the radio in 1939. That performance appears on RAMBLING BOY, a loving tribute to traditional country music and Haden's own roots. Along with all four of his children (and Tanya Haden's husband, actor Jack Black, who sings a rousing "Old Joe Clark"), guests include Elvis Costello, Dan Tyminski, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, Ruth Cameron, Pat Metheny, Bruce Hornsby, and Ricky Skaggs. The songs include country standards and original material like Josh Haden's "Spiritual" (previously recorded by Johnny Cash) and the politically minded "Is This America? (Katrina 2005)."
JazzTimes (p.86) - "It's gorgeous....Its captains are Haden's triplet daughters, Petra, Tanya and RAchel....Their three-part harmony sparkles on 'Single Girl, Married Girl'..." Dirty Linen (p.46) - "[A] successful attempt to resurrect the spirit of family bands of the early to mid 20th century." Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.58) - "RAMBLING BOY is essentially a family affair, just like those radio shows circa 1940....When it works, RAMBLING BOY makes early country music great: it's about the songs, not the showcasing..."
With the exception of Charles Mingus, Charlie Haden is perhaps the most important post-bop jazz bassist. His work with Ornette Coleman's original groundbreaking quartet helped establish the blueprint for free jazz, a blueprint that Haden himself augmented with his own Liberation Music Orchestra. Haden is as well known for his collaborations and work as a sideman--with Hampton Hawes, Pat Metheny, and Michael Brecker, among others--as he is for his own projects, and has been an inspiration for a host of diverse bass players in various genres. He is also the father of Petra, Tanya, Rachel, and Josh Haden, four talented musicians in their own right.
