Though she initially gained fame as an actress, this multi-talented Mississippian launched a lucrative second career as a pop-savvy R&B songstress that brought her fame and success at a pace that easily outstripped her success on screen. Her early records, NEVER SAY NEVER and FULL MOON, cast her as a middle-of-the-road teen icon, but her 2008 release, HUMAN, trades in the more aggressive hip-hop-inflected R&B sounds of her 2004 outing, AFRODISIAC, which featured contributions from such luminaries as Kanye West and Timbaland. Though HUMAN sports a higher percentage of slow-burning retro-soul ballads than its immediate predecessor, former collaborator Timbaland and longtime producer Rodney Jerkins give HUMAN a carefully considered modern R&B sound that should please Brandy's fan base and relative newcomers alike.
Billboard (p.39) - "[With] the hand-clap-laden '1st and Love'; and 'True,' about an unfaithful boyfriend, on which Brandy takes her vocal range to untapped heights."
Blender (Magazine) (p.62) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Fluttery jams about long distance longing and time-suspending slow dances are balanced by grown-up moments..."
Among the best of a talented crop of female urban singers that emerged in the mid-1990s, Brandy Norwood soon established herself as a multi-media star. After reaching the top ten with her 1994 self-titled debut album, the singer signed on to star in the hugely popular television show MOESHA, and her second album was recorded during breaks from filming. A soulful vocalist whose mature-sounding early performances belied her young age, Brandy's music made liberal use of modern hip-hop influences while her signing style often recalled vintage R&B. Occasionally dismissed as a lightweight teen idol, Brandy later began working with such superstar producers such as Kanye West and Timbaland, which boosted her credibility. In 2006, Brandy's career suffered a setback when she was involved in a tragic multi-car accident that left one driver dead and several others injured.
