Performer: Dennis Brown
Artist: I Roy Engineer: Fatta Marshall; Errol Thompson; King Tubby; Lee "Scratch" Perry Producer: Niney The Observer Distributor: Fontana Distribution Notes: Lovers of quality old-school roots reggae won't want to sleep on the collaborative work of vocal legend Dennis Brown and producer extraordinaire Niney "The Observer" Holness. When the two hooked up in the mid 1970s they created a slew of singles that have rightfully taken their place in the canon of classic reggae tracks. Essentials such as "Westbound Train," "Tribulation," "Cassandra," and "Tenement Yard" are here, of course, showcasing the sweet-spot-hitting balance between Niney's throbbing, bass-heavy production and Brown's smooth croon. The set wraps up with some examples of Brown and Niney's reunion in the 1990s, making for a satisfying, comprehensive retrospective of the duo's work.
The Wire (p.64) - "Many classics appear including 'Cassandra', 'Tribulation' and his brooding claim on the Gaylad's 'Africa'....[There's also] a monster version of one of Dennis finest roots tracks, 'Wolves & Leopards'..."
Dirty Linen (p.55) - "THE NINEY YEARS collects some of Brown's best tracks cut in collaboration with masterful dub producer Niney the Observer..."
Reggae legend Dennis Brown had a distinguished singing career that began when he was 11 years old and resulted in several international hits in the 1970s and '80s. His smooth, soulful delivery endeared him to a broad audience of both music listeners and musicians themselves, leading to studio and production work in addition to solo chart success. Although comfortable singing in the many different genres of reggae music, Brown is perhaps best remembered as a purveyor of the romantic, expressive style known as lovers rock. He died unexpectedly in 1999.
