Performer: Lil KeKe
Artist: Asiah; Tre Virdure; Paul Wall; Slim Thug; Crys Wall; Blak; Pinc Gator Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Personnel: Lil KeKe. Recording information: Swishahouse Studios, New York, New York. On his monumental 12th solo LP, Southside Houston native and original Screwed Up Click member Lil Keke pumps it up for his city. Released through Northside label Swishahouse, LOVED BY FEW HATED BY MANY represents H-Town unity, squashing a longtime rivalry. Lyrically, Keke takes introspective turns--speaking of his difficult childhood ("I'm a G") and the pain of seeing friends pass away ("Miss My Boyz")--while still making time for traditional gangsta braggadocio ("Boss," "Money in the City," "4 Doors and Coupes"). Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Yung Redd, and Tre Virdure are also featured.
Born and raised in southside Houston in the Hershelwood neighborhood, Lil Keke came up freestyling alongside Fat Pat on some of DJ Screw's most popular tapes and helped found the Screwed Up Click. After his 1997 debut, DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS, sold an impressive 40,000 copies in Houston alone, it was re-released nationally as THE COMMISSION, moving 100,000 units on the strength of the 'hood anthem "Southside." Keke would release nine independent solo albums and a handful of collaboration LPs (with Slim Thug, Big Hawk, and his crew Herschelwood Hardheadz) before signing with famed northside label Swishahouse in 2005. His long-awaited Swishahouse debut, LOVED BY FEW HATED BY MANY, appeared in 2008.
