Notes: Based on the story of Leonard Chess, the co-founder of the legendary Chess Records label, CADILLAC RECORDS is a film that chronicles the rise of one of America's great recording institutions. Throughout the 1950s and '60s, Chess was the premiere label for blues and R&B, putting out music by such iconic talents as Howlin'Wolf, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley. The soundtrack features contemporary R&B and hip-hop stars Beyonce, Mos Def, Jeffrey Wright, Raphael Saadiq, and others (who also appear as actors in the film), covering well known tunes including "I'm a Man" and "No Particular Place to Go," made famous by the original Chess artists.
Entertainment Weekly (p.63) - "[T]he actors nail just the right blend of reverence and vitality in their covers..." -- Grade: B Living Blues (p.38) - "Wright nails the four Waters selections with appropriate style and attitude. His reading of Robert Johnson's 'Country Blues,' supported only by Bill Simm Jr.'s slide guitar, is especially chilling." Billboard (p.41) - "The songs are performed in WALK THE LINE fashion by the actors....Ms. Knowles sounds wonderful..."
