An impassioned live album by gospel singer and preacher Donnie McClurkin, WE ARE ALL ONE: LIVE IN DETROIT contains extended live takes of songs from throughout McClurkin's decade-plus career, along with brief, pointed sermons and homilies. Highlights include "That's What I Believe," "Wait on the Lord," and the title track. Mixing both studio cuts and tracks recorded live at Straight Gate Church in Detroit, MI, Donnie McClurkin's seventh solo album -- and his first in four years -- features his trademark smooth baritone voice over an eclectic set of praise and worship songs, some of which could almost pass for secular pop/rock. The themes are very much spiritual ones, though, and McClurkin is adept at making his songs speak both specifically and generally in that regard, and he's always recognized that love, in all its guises, is a very big word, and when he sings about reaching toward God, the best of his songs seem to touch on more earthly concerns, as well. Karen Clark Sheard, CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, and Mary Mary have guest turns here, and it all adds up to a buoyant, uplifting, and joyous set. ~ Steve Leggett
Contemporary gospel performer Donnie McClurkin emerged on the gospel scene with his 1996 self-titled debut album, which featured the hit single "Stand." Though his career has not been without political and personal controversy (McClurkin is affiliated with the controversial "ex-gay" movement, and admits to having fathered a child out of wedlock), he remains a hugely popular figure on the contemporary black gospel scene. His most popular albums include 2005's Grammy-winning PSALMS, HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS.
