Blige; Sun God; Kanye West; Ne-Yo; Amy Winehouse Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: While, as a whole, the Wu-Tang Clan's output throughout the 2000s has been dubious at best, Ghostface Killah stands as one of the few original clansmen whose discography has remained consistently fresh. On GHOSTDEINI THE GREAT, the Wally Champ presents a blend of remixes, rare cuts, and greatest hits that span his remarkable solo career. From Ghost's first single--the heartfelt Jackson 5-inspired, childhood memoir "All That I Got Is You"--through a string of gritty, drug-trafficking narratives ("Kilo Remix," "Run Remix," "It's Over") down to the contemporary Wu posse cuts that stand up against the crew's best work ("9 Milli Bros.," "Yolanda's House"), GHOSTDEINI THE GREAT is an impressive survey of the Stapleton native's trajectory. This collection also contains the exclusive holiday-themed track, "Ghostface X-Mas." Ice Cube, Beanie Sigel, Jadakiss, Styles P, Freeway, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Ne-Yo, Mary J. Blige, and Ghost's Wu-Tang brethren are all featured. Not a greatest-hits set for casual fans, and not quite a rarities set for the diehards who don't quite snap up every leaked track -- it wouldn't be accurately titled Even More Fish, either -- GhostDeini the Great is somewhere between all of these designations. Def Jam's third consecutive December Ghostface release, the disc mixes it up between album cuts from Ironman and Supreme Clientele ("Apollo Kids," "All That I Got Is You," "Cherchez LaGhost," "Mighty Healthy"), remixes (most contain alternate guest verses), and previously unreleased material (none of which is great shakes, though "Ghostface Xmas" adds a little seasonal value). Fans won't be thrilled doubling up on tracks they already have, but the set is definitely more for them than for those who know little beyond the classics. ~ Andy Kellman
Blender (Magazine) (p.67) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "In addition to familiar-to-fan gems, he tosses in a handful of rare remixes featuring Kanye and Lil Wayne, as well as two new tracks."
With more successful releases under his belt--including IRONMAN and the SUPREME CLIENTELE--than any other member of the venerable Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah is arguably the Wu's biggest star. While other members of the rap collective have broadened their artistic palettes over the years to include film and TV work, Ghostface has remained dedicated to releasing stellar records marked by expansive soul-based samples and a dizzyingly complex ghetto-slang vocabulary. In 2006, he collaborated with underground star MF Doom for FISHSCALES.
