Performer: The Allman Brothers Band
Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Duane Allman (electric & slide guitars); Dickey Betts (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Warren Haynes (acoustic, electric, slide & guitars, background vocals); Johnny Neel (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Allen Woody (electric, fretless, 6-string & acoustic basses, background vocals); Berry Oakley (bass); Jaimoe, Butch Trucks (drums, percussion); Marc Quinones (congas, percussion). Producers include: Tom Dowd. Engineers include: Jay Mark, Bud Snyder. MYCOLOGY is an anthology documenting the Allman Brothers work in the '90s, and a surprisingly strong set at that, considering these guys are in the unfortunate position of competing with their own legend! To highlight that point, this set concludes with a previously unreleased live track from 1970 featuring the original band lineup with the late Duane Allman and Berry Oakley; it's a tribute to the consistency of the group's musical vision that there's next to no difference in sound between that track and the more recent cuts, (with the exception of the acoustic version of Greg Allman's signature "Midnight Rider").
They're known as the founding fathers of Southern rock, but the Allman Brothers were actually much more progressive than the musical school they inspired. They reclaimed the US-influenced blues-rock of Cream et al. and brought it back to America, adding country and jazz touches. They were noted for their improvisatory skills, particularly the inspired dual-guitar work of Dickey Betts and the late Duane Allman. Even after the deaths of Duane and original bassist Berry Oakey and the departure of Betts, the band soldiered on strongly into the 21st century, led by founding singer/organist Gregg Allman.
