Notes: Personnel: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, piano); Teddy Riley (trumpet); Jim Duggan (trombone); Liston Johnson (clarinet), Walter Payton (bass); Freddie Kohlman (drums). Recorded in New Orleans on November 4 & 11, 1978, when Harry Connick, Jr. was 11 years old. Digitally remastered by Gregg Rubin (October 1, 1992, BMG Studios, New York). The music on this spirited but amateurish Dixieland record would never have been released by Columbia if were not for the presence of an 11-year old pianist named Harry Connick, Jr. His solos are quite basic (not on the level of Sergio Salvatore) while his vocal on "Doctor Jazz" is only cute the first time around. The loose group jams through nine familiar Dixieland standards. The erratic trumpeter Teddy Riley leads the ensembles while Walter Payton (Nicholas' father) drives the group effectively on bass. This CD is only really of historical interest. ~ Scott Yanow
Q (3/93, p.85) - 3 Stars - Good - "...simply a rather short, if spirited, album of New Orleans trad jazz played by a classy ensemble..."
