Performer: John Denver
Artist: Steve Weisberg; Hal Blaine
Distributor: Sony Music Distribution (

Notes: Personnel includes: John Denver (vocals, acoustic guitar); Steve Weisberg (acoustic & electric guitars, pedal steel guitar, dobro); John Sommers (acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle); Dick Kniss (bass); Hal Blaine (drums, percussion). Compilation producer: Paul Williams. Liner notes by Joseph Laredo. A more subdued album than the previous year's popular Windsong, Spirit is sprinkled with well-played country tunes ("Hitchhiker," "Baby, You Look Good to Me Tonight"), covers of old chestnuts ("Polka Dots and Moonbeams," "San Antonio Rose"), and contemplative ballads ("Like a Sad Song," "In the Grand Way"). While not an essential album for the casual fan, those exploring Denver's catalog more deeply will find much to like here. ~ Rob Caldwell
As John Denver, the former John Henry Deutschendorf was a ubiquitous icon of the 1970s. Although he had been a musician and songwriter in the 1960s, penning "Leaving on a Jet Plane" for Peter, Paul & Mary, Denver hit his stride in the '70s with earnest folk songs celebrating the glories of the natural world and life's simple pleasures. Although he was sometimes savaged by critics for his overarching earnestness, his songs speak for themselves, and his records still sell in large numbers. In the wake of his premature death in a 1997 plane crash, a number of contemporary artists have recorded Denver's songs, without any hint of irony.
