The Very Best of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band compiles the highlights from the group's first two albums, which featured the kitschy, big band-influenced disco group at the height of their powers. All of the group's hits -- "I'll Play the Fool," "Whispering/Cherchez La Femme/Se Si Bon," "Sour and Sweet/Lemon in the Honey" -- are included on the collection, as well as a number of first-rate album tracks, making it not only the perfect place to start, but also the only Dr. Buzzard album any fan needs to own. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Spin (p.112) - "[They] wrapped knowing, catty sentiments in big-band arrangements and vocalist Cory Daye's butter-cream alto."
Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band was one of the most original musical ensembles of the disco era. The concept of the group was the re-creation of a '30s dance band, la Cab Calloway, with witty lyrics and a disco beat. All of this was in evidence on their self-titled debut album, released in 1976. It produced the dancefloor hit "Cherchez la Femme" and went gold. A follow-up album, Meets King Pennett, was less successful. After the release of a third album, the group fragmented, with Darnell and Hernandez going off to form Kid Creole & the Coconuts. Browder reorganized and issued a Dr. Buzzard's Savannah Band (dropping the "original") album in 1984. ~ William Ruhlmann
