Recorded in New York and Hackensack, New Jersey. Every once in awhile, musicians emerge who seem able to redefine their chosen genre. Groove Theory is made up of such musicians. Bryce Wilson and Amel Larrieux come from the streets; Wilson was part of Mantronix, Larrieux was a shy, poetry-writing kid from NYC who listened to the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Together, they deal with the cold greyness of the modern urban landscape with more of a groove than gangsta rap, and with the "inside out" of soul. Larrieux has a voice from heaven, and she rides this debut disc like a bicycle down Broadway on the first day of spring, from the hip-hop/pop of "Baby Love," to the magnificent radio smash "Tell Me." There are no throwaways on this disc. Every song has some compelling musical idea ("You're Not The 1"), some playful aural quirk ("Hey U"), or conveys a new way of seeing things (a straight-up soul cover of Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me").
