Engineer: Larry Greenhill; Bobby Arnold Producer: Merle Haggard; Willie Nelson Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: Personnel: Merle Haggard (vocals, electric guitar); Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Clint Strong, Roy Nichols (electric guitar); Norman Hamlet (steel guitar); Jimmy Belkin, Johnny Gimble (fiddle); Don Markham (saxophone); Gary Church (trumpet); Mark Yeary (piano); Spencer Starnes, Dennis Hromek, Dean Reynolds (bass); Biff Adams (drums); Donna Faye (background vocals). Recorded at Pedernales Recording Studio, Spicewood, Texas. In 1983, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson scored a major country hit with their duet album PANCHO AND LEFTY. The success of the record, which yielded two Top Ten hits, assured that the two old friends would again record together. 1987's SEASHORES OF OLD MEXICO is that belated follow-up album. Unlike its slickly produced predecessor, SEASHORES OF OLD MEXICO has a homey, subdued feel. By using Haggard's stage band and recording the album at Nelson's home studio, co-producers Haggard and Nelson created a disc that stands in welcome contrast to the overproduced records of the era. The tone of the album is wistful, with nearly all its ten tracks ballads. Haggard and Nelson take a surprisingly respectable stab at the Beatles' "Yesterday" and succeed entirely with "Without You On My Side," "When Times Were Good," "Why Do I Have To Choose," and especially "If I Could Only Fly." A new version of Haggard's classic "Silver Wings" is the only failure on this minor but very enjoyable release from two of country's giants.
Willie Nelson began working in a conventional Nashville style and had great success as the songwriter of Faron Young's hit "Hello Walls" and others, but he was initially unable to make it as a performer. In the 1970s, he and Waylon Jennings made history with their outlaw country sound and image, growing their hair long and utilizing a raw, rock-influenced sound that endeared them to millions of country fans and rockers alike. Subsequently, Nelson ventured into Sinatra territory with STARDUST, an album of standards that became a huge success and established him as a singer who transcended genre boundaries. Throughout the '80s, '90s, and into the 21st century, he crossed over into pop and back again continually, even releasing an album of reggae covers, working with artists as diverse as Julio Iglesias and Ryan Adams.
