White Rabbit & Other Hits is a budget-priced, eight-track collection that contains several of Jefferson Airplane's most familiar songs ("Somebody to Love," "White Rabbit," "Embryonic Journey," "Plastic Fantastic Lover," "Volunteers"), but these very songs are available on better, more thorough compilations that aren't much more expensive than this, so the purpose of this collection is a little mystifying. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine White Rabbit & Other Hits is a budget-priced, eight-track collection that contains several of Jefferson Airplane's most familiar songs ("Somebody to Love," "White Rabbit," "Embryonic Journey," "Plastic Fantastic Lover," "Volunteers"), which makes it of interest to budget-minded consumers. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This is a rather odd addition to the long list of Airplane compilations. Why just eight songs in the CD era? And why these songs, as opposed towell, other ones? In any event, whatever the motivation (or lack of one) behind this, there's no denying the music is top drawer, with a little something (in chronological order) from all the Airplane's studio albums of the '60s. And stylistically, it's quite a ride, from the folk-rock of "It's No Secret" to the sinister psychedelia of "White Rabbit" to the solo folk guitar of "Embryonic Journey" to the rabble-rousing agit-pop of "Volunteers."
One of the quintessential San Francisco psychedelic bands, the Jefferson Airplane brought together interests in acoustic blues, folk, and rock music. Add political topicality and modal improvisations, and you have an inspired, mind-bending sound that could have only sprung forth from the late '60s. In their initial, most beloved phase, they were powered by the powerful dual lead vocals of Grace Slick and Marty Balin and the serpentine guitar of Jorma Kaukonen. They went through a traumatic series of personnel and name changes over the decades (they ventured into commercial AOR in the late '70s and early '80s) but their early work retains its seminal power.
