Originally asked to simply lend a hand, the former Buffalo Springfield bassist and founding member of Poco ended up contributing much more: he acted as producer, singer, guitarist, songwriter, and mandolin player. The creamy-voiced Loggins takes the lead on "Danny's Song," which was later a Top 10 hit for Canadian chanteuse Anne Murray, and ranks among the definitive love ballads of the decade. Loggins also sings on the unabashedly sentimental "House at Pooh Corner," where he tunefully yearns for "the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh." "Vahevala," Loggins & Messina's contribution to the sailor-song genre recently made popular by bands like Grand Funk and the one-hit wonders Looking Glass, ranks among their most beloved tracks. Among Jim Messina's strong contributions is a medley of songs that culminates in the compelling, gospel-tinged "Peace of Mind." Messina's role on what was initially a Kenny Loggins album led to one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the '70s.
