Performer: Original Soundtrack/Branford Marsalis
Artist: Gang Starr; Cynda Williams Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: Original score composed by Bill Lee. Producers: Delfeayo Marsalis, Raymond Jones, D.J. Premier, Bill Lee. Engineers: Patrick Smith, Rob "Wa Ko" Hunter, Larry DeCarmine. Recorded at RCA Studios and Sound On Sound Studios, New York. Spike Lee's father, jazz bassist Bill Lee, has been among the most distinguished, least heralded composers in jazz since the late 1950s. Of the many fine soundtracks he has scored for his son's movies, MO' BETTER BLUES may just be the closest to his heart, with a jazz quintet as the dramatic focus of the film. Branford Marsalis' working band, augmented by the superb trumpeter Terence Blanchard, provides the solo voices for the protagonists played by Wesley Snipes and Denzel Washington. Marsalis also collaborates with Spike Lee on a clever jazz/rap commentary, "Pop Top 40."
