Notes: Poco's history is full of radical personnel shifts, and DELIVERIN' was the last album the band recorded with its original lineup. Following closely on the heels of the band's fine first two albums, PICKIN' UP THE PIECES and POCO, DELIVERIN' brings the country-rock sound of those records into a concert setting. The album bucks the trend of most live releases, however, by featuring all unreleased material, combining quality new songs with the energy and intimacy of a live performance. Poco was arguably at their best in concert: their high, sweet harmonies are as impressive live as they are on the band's studio releases (Jim Messina, who would leave the band shortly after this release, is in particularly fine voice), and the playing is loose, charged, and assured.
Rolling Stone (3/4/71, p.52) - "...This is Poco's third album, their first live album, and as such it serves to render the first two nearly superfluous....Poco will always be better off keeping away from studios and staying out in front of people. It keeps them honest..."
Poco was part of the first wave of West Coast country-rock bands, emerging from the ashes of the seminal Buffalo Springfield and initially built around Springfield's singer/guitarist Richie Furay and producer/sessionman Randy Meisner. They combined the harmony-laden folk-rock sound of the '60s with a country twang (mostly courtesy of pedal steel guitarist Rusty Young) and made a few noted country-rock albums in the early '70s before their sound turned slicker and poppier later in the decade.
