On "Company Man" Taylor takes another look at his uneasy relationship with fame and the music business. "Johnnie Comes Back" is a dark little rocker about some particularly nasty goings on. While he was in the rock neighborhood J.T. even manages to prance and preen a little in his danceable raveup of the Beatles' "Day Tripper." "Rainy Day Man" is revisited from his first record and the classic Goffin-King "Up On The Roof" is covered with a new vigor as James makes it completely his own. Especially moving is the sad and beautiful "Millworker," written for the Broadway musical "Working" and based on the Studs Terkel book of the same name.
James Taylor was the archetype for the gentle, inward-looking singer/songwriter movement of the early '70s. The easy lilt and timbre of Taylor's voice belies the complex emotional content of his songs, which aren't merely carefree folk-based odes, but instead look unflinchingly at a flawed man's journey through life. It's a tribute to his knack for making great pop records that he managed a long, decade-plus string of big hits. Taylor remained relevant long after his impressive run of top 40 hits, recording numerous million-selling records in the '90s & '00s and winning multiple Grammys.
