Notes: Sony's All-Star Christmas has a little something for everyone, drawing from its vast array of artists in many different pop music styles, as well as reaching back into the vaults for songs from the '80s and '90s. There's plenty of mainstream, adult contemporary-style pop, but also R&B (Babyface, Al Green, Luther Vandross), blues (Keb' Mo'), country (Billy Gilman with Asleep at the Wheel), classical (Charlotte Church), new age (Ottmar Liebert), and, of course, novelty items (Elmo & Patsy's ubiquitous "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer"). The songs are a mix of perennial standards and artist-penned original compositions. So, all in all, there's plenty of variety here for fans of 2000's contemporary mainstream. ~ Steve Huey The Yuletide compilation ALL STAR CHRISTMAS is a perfect example of truth in advertising. It includes Christmas songs by heavy hitters from every walk of the pop world. Diva Celine Dion kicks things off with a straightforward take on "The Christmas Song," and R&B maestro Babyface adds a soulful tinge to his version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Bluesman Keb Mo takes a solo acoustic approach to "Jingle Bell Jamboree," while Al Green makes the most of a lush arrangement on his velvet-smooth cover of "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Kids will be delighted by the Elmo & Patsy tune "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer," while baby boomers will relish the reverberant guitar tones of Jeff Beck, who closes the album out on an instrumental "Amazing Grace."
