Long-lived British space-rockers Hawkwind debuted in 1969 and were still going strong 40 years later, despite a dizzying array of personnel shifts. This three-disc set chronicles the band's later period, from 1985's epic THE CHRONICLE OF THE BLACK SWORD, a collaboration with sci-fi author/longtime cohort Michael Moorcock, to 1997's DISTANT HORIZONS. While founding guitarist Dave Brock is the only constant from one end of this collection to the other (not to mention the band's whole discography), the trademark combination of swooping electronic effects, futuristic themes, and heavy guitars remains remarkably consistent.
Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "THE DREAM GOES ON provides a timely reminder that, as the band prepare to celebrate their 40th anniversary, Hawkwind remain resolutely out there."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "There are some flashes of magic, 'The War I Survived' is a stunning late track, ticking all the boxes for classic Hawk status."
Inspired equally by the hippie lifestyle/marathon jamming of the '60s West Coast bands and the interstellar excursions of Pink Floyd, Hawkwind helped invent "space rock" as we know it today. Through countless albums and personnel shifts, they've continued to combine heavy rock with science fiction in a futuristic setting, inspiring a generation of bands and several international space-rock festivals.
