Notes: Issued in early 2009, this four-disc box set collects music featured on the early seasons of Showtime's lauded lesbian-themed drama, THE L WORD, including the two-CD compilation for Season 3. Highlights include Lucinda Williams's emotive "Right in Time," Le Tigre's barbed "On the Verge," Shivaree's soulful "I Will Go Quietly," and Neko Case's wistful "Porchlight." This budget-priced slipcased set houses the soundtracks to the first three seasons of The L Word, thereby earning its clever title of Menage a Trois. The title is the only thing new about the set -- there are no extra tracks or packaging -- but the set is quite a deal, retailing for the same price that the two-disc third-season soundtrack did on its own. So, any fans of the show should certainly consider this Menage a Trois as a way to get three collections of music that sharply mix adult alternative singer/songwriters, stylish club music, classic female vocalists of all stripes, and hip indie rock to provide a fitting soundtrack for the show. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
