Although Freddie McGregor had been performing steadily throughout the 1960s and `70s in Jamaica, he recorded only as a singles artist. In 1979, McGregor released his first full-length, MR. MCGREGOR, which drew on his talent for rocksteady and lover's rock, while announcing his recent conversion to Rastafarianism (the album's themes are influenced by classic Rasta topics). A collaboration with legendary Jamaican producer Niney the Observer, MR. MCGREGOR has a rich, deep sound that perfectly complements McGregor's smooth, soulful voice. An overlooked gem, this fine debut will please any fan of classic roots.
