Performer: Chamillionaire
Distributor: Phantom Import Distributi Notes: Not to be outdone by his mixtape-happy contemporaries like Lil Wayne, this talented Houston MC (of "Ridin' Dirty" fame) has been distributing his unofficial, street-cred-accumulating series since 2005. MESSIAH 6 isn't always expertly focused--bouncing from typically drawling Texas-style production to grittier, East Coast-reminiscent cuts like "Best Rapper Alive"--but that's part of the album's anarchic charm. And while there's guests aplenty (Lil Flip, Chalie Boy, et al), it's Killa Kyleon and Lil Ray who kill it like UGK on the surprisingly G-Funk-inspired ghetto bounce of "Murder They Wrote."
Flying under the mainstream radar for many years, Chamillionaire (aka the Mixtape Messiah) has been a fixture of the Houston hip-hop scene since he was a teenager, working with the now-legendary Swisha House clique and releasing dozens of mixtapes that went "ghetto gold." By the time he finally hooked up with a major label in 2005, his multi-tempo delivery and harmonized vocals were already shining like a diamond grill. As THE SOUND OF REVENGE went platinum, Chamillionaire assumed his rightful place alongside Bun-B, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, and Mike Jones as a true playa in the Houston hip-hop renaissance of the early 2000s.
