Performer: Otis Redding
Artist: Booker T. & The MG's; The Memphis Horns Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Steve Cropper (guitar); Andrew Love, Joe Arnold (tenor saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Booker T. Jones (organ); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Recorded in March 1967. Originally released on Atco (33-286). Includes original release liner notes by Deanie Parker. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch. Recorded in March of 1967, this raw-boned performance ably demonstrated Otis Redding's fiery live persona. Solidly backed by the Memphis Horns and Booker T. & The MG's, Redding's phrasing and excitement rivaled fellow Georgia native James Brown. Equally at home with ballads and uptempo material (much of it self-penned), Redding was also a master interpreter. His facility as a song stylist extended to include everything from Smokey Robinson and Sam Cooke to the rock & roll of the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Three months after this performance, his Monterey Pop appearance propelled Redding to massive crossover success.
Q (9/93, p.102) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...[LIVE IN EUROPE] is one of the few albums to give James Brown's LIVE AT THE APOLLO a run for its money..."
One of the great 1960s soul men, Otis Redding combined the rhythmic grit of James Brown with the sweet gospel croon of Sam Cooke. The Georgia-born singer/songwriter had his first flush of success in '63 with "These Arms of Mine," and the hits kept flowing. Redding's punchy, horn-driven, emotive style helped define the classic Stax soul sound. His performance at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival in '67 demonstrated his ability to appeal to a larger pop/rock audience, and he had indeed become a major star by that point. Sadly, Redding was killed in a plane accident later that year at the age of 26. Despite a career cut short by his tragic death, he has had a lasting influence on generations of singers in numerous genres.
